It all started at Buddies in Bad Times’ Queer Poetry Night…
I’ve always been a writer, and I’ve always wanted to share my work.
I write emotional narratives, silly rhythmic bits, and reflections on living with Autism.
Two years ago, in a creative writing group run by Autism Ontario, I was encouraged to try performing my work after reading a piece I was very proud of, titled “Thanks, Chuck." After googling “Open Mics Near Me This Weekend” I stumbled into the welcoming arms of Queer Poetry Night at Buddies in Bad Times theatre in Toronto.
Thanks, Chuck! // Closed Game
My very first time showing my writing to a group of strangers. Any kind of writing, and any kind of strangers.
Thanks, Chuck! Is about containing multitudes. It’s about the chaos of having an autistic brain, and it’s about being composed of everyone you’ve ever met, all at once. It remains my favourite.
Closed Game… is a chess metaphor.
I’ve since been a regular at the monthly event. This incredible community helped me realize that there is in fact an audience for the silly things I create, and that the poems I love the most are often the most well-received.
Two years later, I have continued to grow more confident as and artist and have since performed at numerous other open mics in the city:
The Liar’s Club (Epochal Imp)
Art Bar (Free Times Cafe)
House of Arts (Bampot)
Spark Up (Tail of the Junction)
Featured Artist at Outer Haven (The Cloak and Dagger)
